The First Lego League Experience
Participating in FLL brings many benefits to students, as they develop their skills in science, technology, engineering, and math. Students also develop their research and public speaking skills in order to complete the presentation portion of the competition, building their self confidence and overall awareness of how to solve real life problems using teamwork!
Please click here to visit First LEGO League’s website for more information about FLL. Also be sure to check out our FLL awards and teams from past competitions!
2023-2024 FLL theme
This year’s theme is “Masterpiece”! First LEGO League is looking for students that can invent new ways to create art using STEM. See the FLL Season Teaser video here: https://youtu.be/QArg43rCMBA

Time Commitment
If elected to be on our team, expect a four-month commitment to prepare for the competition. We will begin virtual meetings during the summer and in-person team meetings will begin in September. The competition usually occurs on the first Saturday in December (we will post specific dates as FLL announces updates). If our team qualifies to enter the Provincial level competition, this secondary competition usually occurs on the second Saturday of January. Keep in mind that team meetings and preparation may take place in December.
While we can’t guarantee that the team will qualify for Provincials (as this is entirely dependent on competition results and judging), our FLL teams at The Cube have successfully qualified for Provincials in all the seasons we have participated in. We hope to continue this streak and keep this goal in mind for the new season!
At the beginning of the season, we will meet once to twice per week. As the competition week draws closer, please expect these meetings to increase to up to 4 times per week gradually. Each of our sessions typically lasts from 60-90 minutes. Please note this is an essential consideration before you apply to participate in our team.
Presentation Commitment
For our competition presentation, students may select to sing, dance, or wear creative costumes to stand out from the crowd. Students must feel comfortable presenting as part of a team supporting the presentation strategy the team comes up with.
LOCATION
We will be meeting in-person at Beaches Presbyterian Church for our practices and meetings. Some of our meetings will be conducted virtually via Zoom.
TEAM COMPOSITION
Team members will be assigned to different groups – the research team or the robot team – according to their best skill-set. Please keep in mind that all parts of the competition have equal weight on the final score.
Fees
The registration fee for the 2023-2024 season comprises three instalments of $295 + HST. The first payment is made upon registration if you have been officially accepted onto the team. The second payment and third payments will be automatically processed within two months. Alternatively, we offer an option to pay up-front for the entire season. The registration cost for our 2023-2024 season will be $796.50 + HST, a one-time payment with a 10% discount.
The season starts in the summer with one or two scheduled Zoom meetings to discuss the season theme and schedule, and it concludes at the Provincial Level competition or qualifier level. In-person team meetings will begin in September. If we are selected for further participation in the tournament, an additional fee will be determined based on the level of commitment required.
We have qualified for Provincials each year and participated in the tournament – we hope to do the same this year!
What is included in the fee?
The fee includes tuition, team uniforms, and all materials for the innovation project. This fee will also include some of our pizza lunches and snacks.
FLL TEAM Application Form
Please fill in the form below in order to apply to the team.
Filling in this form does not guarantee a spot on our competition team. Team selection is based on available spots (up to 10 members are allowed), and members will be selected by a committee composed of Cube instructors and several past team members. We will be in touch via email to let you know whether or not you have been accepted onto our competition team this year!
We will be making our team selection between June 20 and July 31, 2023.
